If there is one portion of scripture that has captured my attention for the time and season that we find ourselves in, it would be Psalms chapter two.
Even though this Psalm was written so many years ago, it would appear that what is being said is a description of our day. And it could be said of many other times in history also – there is nothing new under the sun.
In this chapter the nations and the rulers of the earth are plotting together against the Lord, and against His anointed One, Christ. (v.1-3) They are angry. They plot. They conspire together. They make worthless plans. And it says that they are saying: “Let us break their chains,” they cry, “and free ourselves from slavery to God.” NLT
These first three verses are all about man: (the world; the kings of the earth, the rulers of the nations) trying to throw off the Sovereignty of God! Or they are trying to break themselves free from God’s authority and ultimately from His eternal Plan. Well, guess what guys: News Flash – It won’t work!
The Lord still rules from Heaven, He laughs, He rebukes, and He terrifies them. (v.4) Then at this point in the Psalm it changes slightly. The Lord declares in (v.6) that He has established His King, (at that time David, and then referring to eternal reign of Jesus) from a throne in Jerusalem and that the King who God has established proclaims the Lord’s decree (v.7). And then it says what the Lord’s decree is: “The Lord said to me, ‘You are my son. Today I have become your Father.”
WOW! The Lord’s decree is the whole message of the Bible. You are My son, (child) and today I have become your Father. Only two times in the entire New Testament where God spoke audibly from Heaven. The first time was at Jesus’s water baptism Luke 3:20,21 (this is My Son, in whom I am well pleased) and Mark 9 (this is My Son, hear ye him) at the Mount of Transfiguration.
This is the message and a decree that is coming out of Heaven today, and then it says in (v.8) ‘Only ask!’ NLT. It’s time to declare the Lord’s decree and ASK for the nations as our inheritance.
