My heart was stirred as I read through the March 2013 issue of Firstlight News and came to the article about a 14-year-old boy named Wat who is being mentored weekly through the FWF ministry.
You see, I have been mentoring boys from the inner city of Pittsburgh, PA for the last seven years; none of them have a father at home who is investing in their lives. The article stated, “Every home visit makes a difference.” For Wat, the weekly mentoring is changing his life.
From my mentoring experience, I know programs don’t lead people on a process of transformation and life change, but long-term relationships do — especially when Christ is at the core.
Sharing life together once a week, through a mentoring relationship, brings transformation. But as much as I rejoice in observing the Lord transform troubled young men, my biggest surprise is how the Lord has transformed my heart for His mission through mentoring! Is it any wonder why my heart is drawn to Firstlight International’s Families Without Fathers (FWF) project? When you plow yourselves into God’s great mission, He will cultivate your heart in line with His purposes.
