2012 Marks Five Years of Families Without Fathers (FWF) in Thailand!
Our Firstlight Area Teams have taken on this project and they have really done well with it. Each month throughout the year, there are weekly visits taking place to the homes and area schools consisting of 91 children from fatherless homes in 8 locations around the country. Twice a year, school fees and related supplies are being provided for every child involved in the program. Over the past five years the results have been incredible and the project has grown quite considerable. It has been reported that 30% of all Thais have been affected in some way by a fatherless home thus the mission of FWF is being fulfilled.
Part of the project expansion this year, 20 new children were added in the district of Sawannakhuha, and 9 new children in a sub district of Baan Lat – both places located in the province of Nong Bua Lam Phu, Thailand, where Firstlight is planting churches.
During our family interviews, our trained project staff ask a series of questions that help us to get to know them: who each of these families are, a little bit about their background, and also a brief needs assessment is conducted to determine what other types of needs that they might have that we might be able to help with. We asked a question to Leiw, a 7-year-old boy of one of the new families, “What do want to be when you grow up?” His answer was: “ I want to be a police man.” I think that is a great answer and through FWF, we are able to help make that dream a reality by helping with some of his education needs, weekly visits to his family, praying often with he and his mother and to share God’s word with them. And through this process, they might come to know the Lord Jesus and His great love for them. 100 % of these new families are all from a Buddhist background and each home visit provides a wonderful opportunity for us to demonstrate to them Who God is and how much He loves them! Just our being there means a great deal and let’s them know that someone cares and is willing to help them.
According to our project evaluations, approximately 80% of all FWF children have accepted Christ and they are either in church or in church-related small group activities regularly. Often times, we have seen their other family members accept Christ also.
